Background Information
Founded in 1913 at Howard University in Washington, DC, Delta Sigma Theta is a non-profit sorority of college educated women dedicated to public service. Today there are over 900 chapters throughout the United States, Africa, Japan, Korea and the Caribbean Islands. The sorority has a collective membership of more than 200,000 women.
Delta Sigma Theta is fully committed to public service. The sorority’s mission focuses on five major thrusts:
- Educational development
- International awareness and involvement
- Economic development
- Physical and mental health
- Political awareness and involvement
The Charlotte chapter, founded in 1942 contains approximately 460 active members. We have devoted financial and/or volunteer assistance to a number of programs and services. These programs include, but are not limited to, ADACE (alcohol, drug abuse, AIDS and community education), Black History Program, Cotillion and Deltas for Change.
Our most cherished program is the Cotillion. Young ladies, who are seniors in high school, have demonstrated exemplary moral standards and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, are given the opportunity to participate in various sorority-sponsored workshops and awareness sessions. Additionally, the participants are introduced to the many facets of their respective communities, which provides exposure and a foundation that will assist in making them productive citizens. These young ladies (debutantes) are presented to the community at an annual ball in the spring. The Charlotte chapter has sponsored this program for over 40 years.
We thank you for your interest in our Cotillion program and we look forward to seeing you next year.
